The Spooky Origins of Halloween

Halloween, a night filled with thrills and chills, has its roots in ancient festivals. The Celts, who lived in what is now Ireland, Scotland, and the United Kingdom, celebrated Samhain on November 1st. This festival marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.

The Celts believed that on Samhain, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred. Spirits of the deceased would return to the world of the living, and the Celts would leave food and drink offerings for them.

The Evolution of Halloween Traditions

As Christianity spread throughout Europe, the early Christian church tried to eliminate the pagan traditions associated with Samhain. In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1st as All Saints' Day, a day to honor saints and martyrs.

The evening before All Saints' Day became known as All Hallows' Eve, later shortened to Halloween. The tradition of dressing up in costumes and asking for treats was influenced by the European practice of 'souling', where poor people would go door-to-door asking for food and other offerings.
